In the New Testament of the Bible we have Jesus Christ, God the Son, presented as both the revelator (John 18:37) and embodiment (John 14:6) of truth, the truth of God. He graciously takes on the form of a man, so that as a man He can accomplish everything necessary to reconcile men and women to God (2 Corinthians 5:17-19). He is sent by God the Father into a world that has suppressed the truth of God; the truth of His glorious person and His truth regarding how we are to live before Him for His glory and our good. It is a world of people who, having exchanged God’s truth for the lie of the devil, are suffering the severe consequences of doing so; consequences we see in the present worldwide pandemic, and in the divisiveness, strife and injustices fueling the violent and destructive demonstrations in our nation. We are told in 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12, that men and women who continue in their suppression of the truth will ultimately be condemned, destined for eternal judgement.
The Bible presents Jesus as the embodiment of the truth of God’s glory, of the infinite perfections of God’s being most clearly in Hebrews 1:2-3 wherein He is revealed as the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person.
In 2 Corinthians 4 the Apostle Paul writes of the glory of the Gospel, the good news of what Jesus has accomplished through His life, death and resurrection to save men from God’s judgement for our suppression of His truth. In verse 6 he writes, For it is God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
It is by that knowledge, when received and believed, embraced and acted upon as true, that men and women are restored to right relationship with God.
In the person and work of Jesus Christ, we see the glorious truth of God’s holiness; of the excellence of His infinite wisdom; of the awesomeness of His majestic power; of the greatness of His faithfulness; of the loveliness of His humility; of the wonder of His incredible patience with sinners; of His loving kindness and tender mercies to the hurting; of His abundant goodness and amazing grace and of the blessedness of His sovereign authority over all of creation, including men’s hearts. Most importantly we see the truth of God’s redeeming love (Romans 5:8-10) as it is demonstrated in Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross where He takes upon Himself God’s divine justice; His just judgement against sin and infinite wrath deserved by all who have suppressed the truth of His glory through their unrighteous and ungodly living in this world (Romans 1:18-19).
And we are told that God did this so that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward all who would have faith in this ultimate expression of the truth of His mercy and grace in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:4-10)
Throughout the Bible we are called to know the truth, to love the truth, to obey the truth, bear witness to the truth and to live our lives in accordance with the truth. It is not speaking of truth as an abstract concept or subjective motto such as to thine own self be true, but truth as it is revealed in and through the person of God the Son, Jesus Christ. It is only in Christ that mankind will know true justice, and be able to enjoy the everlasting peace and joy that proceeds from Him who is Truth.
