“You are the Christ (promised redeemer), the son of the living God (God the Son).” This is the Apostle Peter’s answer to Jesus’ question to His apostles of who they believe Him to be. And Peter was called blessed by Jesus for giving this answer, as this is the answer all men and women living in this world, a world under the just judgement of God, must come to if we are to be rescued from that judgment and restored to the glorious relationship with God for which we were created, a relationship lost because of sin, our rejection of God’s purpose for and rule over our lives.
The Bible, primarily the New Testament, unequivocally reveals Jesus as the eternal God, God the Son, the second person of the divine trinity (Matthew 3:16-17) (Hebrews 1:1-3). At the same time, it reveals Him as the promised redeemer who came into this world in the form of a man to, as a man, accomplish everything divine justice required for men and women to be forgiven of their sin, declared righteous and reconciled to God through faith in the person and work of Jesus. (Ephesians 1:7) (2 Corinthians 5:17-21)
Now a blog post is hardly an appropriate place to exposit or expound upon either of the glorious but mysterious truths noted above. However, I would like to provide a short commentary on Jesus’ proclamation in John 8:12 …. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
Light, in the Bible, typically refers to revelation of God’s glorious person, presence and blessings; and here in this passage I believe Jesus is stating that He is all of that; that He alone can – and came to reveal the glory of God – the infinite beauty and wonder and value of God’s eternal Being, so that our hearts would no longer be darkened to the truth of the knowledge of the glory of God. (Romans 1:18-21)
Thus Jesus, God the Son, through His miraculous birth, sinless life, sacrificial death and miraculous resurrection reveals to us the beauty of His holiness, the excellence of His infinite wisdom, the awesomeness of His majestic power, the greatness of His faithfulness, the loveliness of His humility, the wonder of His incredible patience, the preciousness of His truth, the splendor of His abundant goodness and amazing grace, the sweetness of His loving kindness and tender mercies, the blessedness of His uncontested sovereign rule and authority, the justness of His wrath and judgment, and the perfections of His redeeming love, a love defined and displayed on the cross at Calvary, where Jesus took upon Himself God’s judgement for sin on behalf of all who would repent of their sin and in faith entrust their lives to Jesus. And we are told in Ephesians 2:4-7 that Jesus did this so that in the eternal ages to come He could display the exceeding riches of His grace and kindness to those who would do so.
In and through the person and work of Jesus Christ, God proves once and for all the ages, both this age and the ages to come, that He is infinitely worthy of being known intimately, loved supremely, trusted explicitly, obeyed perfectly, worshiped exclusively, glorified unashamedly, pursued passionately and enjoyed eternally as the desire of our heart and the delight of our soul, the object of our deepest love and the source of our greatest joy; even in, and especially in, the midst of a worldwide pandemic.
